The Cartwrights and the Turleighs are neighbours. Geoffrey appears to dislike Monica, and when he announces that he has been called away to Antwerp on Business for the weekend it seems mere coincidence that Monica at the same time says she has had a row with Fred and is going to leave him on his own for a few days.
After Geoffrey has left, however, a number of odd events seem to indicate something is wrong somewhere and that Geoffrey is deceiving his wife. Eventually is transpires that not only did he go away, not very willingly, with Monica, but that, disgusted by her behaviour, he struck and accidentally killed her. Though their life together is ruined, Helen, it seems, will stand by him and he secret remain preserved.
